The Sheriff’s Office and the Essex County Department of Corrections are separate agencies, so the Sheriff’s Office directs incarceration questions to ECCF. For a public-record request, the county’s electronic OPRA portal is the primary route.

Police reports are generally available in three to five business days under the Sheriff’s FAQ, but that timing does not promise that a booking photograph is ready. Ask the custodian about the current format, scope, fee, and any redactions before authorizing a photo or bulk production.
Choose the path that matches the question rather than treating every official source as the same record system.
- For an official booking-record or photo request, use the home page’s Essex County search and records path, then submit a focused OPRA request to the likely custodian.
- For a warrant concern or a selected wanted-person listing, use the Sheriff’s Most Wanted route or call the Sheriff’s Office. The Sheriff identifies the Fugitive Squad at 973-621-4181 and Patrol at 973-268-4200.
- For current custody or a release-status question, use the ECCF lookup or call ECCF. New Jersey VINE is the state’s custody-notification channel, not a booking-photo service.
- For court dates or case outcomes, start with NJ Courts Find a Case. The Essex Court Administrator is listed at 973-776-9300, extensions 55701 and 55702.
- For a person in state prison, use the official NJDOC offender information search, which is separate from ECCF custody.
- For a federal sentenced inmate or immigration detainee, use the BOP inmate locator or ICE Online Detainee Locator. Those systems do not answer a county-jail custody question.
